Wishtree

By: Katherine Applegate

Review:

The Perspective of a Tree!? Now I’ve heard it all! In the book Wishtree, I like the story of how every May Day people wish on the town wishtree, named Red. It’s interesting how Red encourages peace even with all the different types of animals he has living in his branches. But when a new human family moves to town someone makes a questionable choice and assumes something incorrect about them, Red oversees the actions taken to try to resolve the issue. The uncertainty of the situation keeps the story flowing smoothly. Because the story is from the perspective of a tree, the story is calmer than it would have been if it were from the perspective of a different protagonist.

Official book description:

Trees can't tell jokes, but they can certainly tell stories. . . .
Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"―people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with a crow named Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this wishtree watches over the neighborhood.
You might say Red has seen it all.
Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experience as a wishtree is more important than ever.
